I am always a bit sceptical about a product when its listed as Amazon's Choice, incase there's some vested interest. But on this occasion their recommendation was well warranted. Straight out of the box it's just so simple to use. On stud partition walls it detected the studs easily, and first time. It not only highlights the center of the studs but also the edges for precise positioning. I tested it on celing joists with similarly positive results. The battons between the joist are set deeper and were still detected in normal stud mode. But the deep mode returned much more detailed positioning of the battons. Detection of electrical cables was usually straightforward and is essential when trying to avoid disasters. If you experience detection of live cables over a wide area, you just need to place the scanner over an area with a high reading and recalibrate. This will reduce sensitivity to provide a higher degree of accuracy in those situations. You should remember that the cables must be live in order to be detected. Some of my central heating pipes are in the concrete flooring and I had some doubts whether they would be detected. But the Metal scan mode made light work of it. In this price range I don't beleive you will find a more comprehensive and capable scanner. Just a good all round performer.

Am a DIY amateur so needed to put some shelves up around the house without dying.
This item is easy to use and flips nicely between settings ie.
Searching for electric cables -> wall studs etc
Contrary to other reviews I found it ok for finding areas to drill into that provide shelf support so would have given it 5 stars were it not for the fact that it is overly-sensitive to find electrical wiring.
Parts of walls where I know for a fact there is no wiring (in this case on staircase stairs) still seem to dupe this device into creating random beeps.
Imagine a metal detector that tells you to dig in areas where there is no treasure but also beep when there actually is treasure there.
It is not bad at all to be honest but be careful - you get vouchers if you submit a 5* review.

The design is nice, and usability is great, but unfortunately this finder was just repeatedly inconsistent and totally unreliable. On one sweep it couldn't detect any studs, then it found one, then it suddenly found one that seemed to be about ten metres long, then it found "edges" in various locations but no centre. It couldn't detect a single thing across the entire range of ceiling joists either on any mode. Borrowed a friend's black and decker, which located all of them. Perhaps I just had a faulty one, but regardless there's no way I am drilling holes anywhere on the basis anything this thing reports. I'd recommend something more expensive
